It feels like forever since we've connected. I don't know about you, but I often times get sidetracked and end up feeling derailed. I come up for air only to realize I have gotten a bit lost. The good news is, that's OK!
Life can get in the way, times passes quickly (blink of an eye!), and before you know it, you feel like you haven't gotten very far with what you originally wanted. So what is it that leads us astray? The answer will be different for all of us. However, one particular culprit seems to be at the cause more times than not. It goes by the name Good Enough.
Let me introduce you to Good Enough
It's the voice inside your head that says, "Ehhhh, tomorrow. Later. It's OK, it'll do. Settle. Wait. You can make it better next time. You tried..." Did you? Are you? I came across a post that got me thinking. It said:
"In 1958, Ernest Hemingway told the Paris Review that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms 39 times before he was satisfied."
As talented as Hemingway was, I imagine the first 38 tries were probably good enough. Clearly, Hemingway was not willing to settle for good enough. He demanded the best possible ending for his book and of himself.
Do you? Are you?
Whether you are a rock star, entrepreneur, bartender, salesperson, stay-at-home parent, teacher, writer, life coach or student, you have a daily opportunity to do your best work and apply your greatest effort, your excellence. So as I re-focus on how I can best serve, help others, and fulfill my calling to inspire and create awareness, I ask myself these very questions:
Am I giving my all?
Am I showing up 100%?
Am I giving it my greatest effort? My excellence?
What is Good Enough whispering in my ear?
What I notice when I go to answer these questions is that Good Enough is shadowing me constantly, and I don't mean in a good way. He is hoping doubt will wrap around me and that I will give in to thoughts of fear, to play small, and accept "good enough." Or, do you overcome mediocrity and procrastination by doing your best job no matter who is around or the level of difficulty?
Imagine deciding that Good Enough has to find someone new to hang with. Imagine embracing your excellence, your fabulousness, and never settling for good enough.
Good enough never is. That's worth repeating: Good enough never is!
Exercise: Ask yourself the following questions. Be aware of the presence of your Good Ebough shadow.
What would be different in your life right now, today, if you no longer accepted "Good Enough"?
What would your Excellence look like?
How confident would you feel if you hit the pillow every night and woke every morning? (Scale of 1-10)
What's stopping you from writing your story for the 39th time, the way you want it to read?
I get that it's easy to be "Good Enough," I do. But from the bottom of my heart we all deserve more. The best, in fact. We just have to be confident enough to ask for it. So ask for it! Demand it of yourself. If you feel stuck in this area, that's OK. I can help you. Let me show you how creating confidence can lead you to having the purpose and passion you truly desire.
